MACOMB – To help wayward pooches and kitties who find themselves at the McDonough County Animal Shelter, the 17th annual Gimme Shelter golf scramble fundraiser, in honor of the late Kris Moore, will take place beginning at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, July 27 at Gold Hills Golf Course, west of Macomb.
Moore, who graduated from Northwestern High School, died in November 2008 from complications related to heart issues. Moore was well-known from growing up in the region and working at The Café for several years, as well as for his volunteer efforts with the McDonough County Humane Society taking photos of the animals up for adoption and his dedication to adopting rescued animals, including his beloved Buddy and Scooter. The annual Kris Moore Gimme Shelter Annual Golf Tournament, was founded by the Moore family and a few of Moore's many friends, including Lee Trotter, Max Huffman and Roger Vizdal, to benefit the Humane Society of McDonough County.
Since the start of the Gimme Shelter outing, Trotter estimates they've raised close to $25,000 for the Humane Society and also donated over two tons of kitty litter for the shelter.
Several of the same people participate year-after-year, with more joining the cause to support the Humane Society and their efforts. Area businesses and individuals donate items for raffle prizes and Gold Hills always serves as the tourney's venue (including providing a meal for the golfers). Cost for the tournament is $55/person, plus a donation of 20 pounds of kitty litter per team. The tournament will feature a scramble format, hole prizes, raffles and a meal.
'We extend our sincere appreciation to Gold Hills, our donors, those who come out, everyone. People keep showing up for this each year, and it's really amazing to honor Kris in this way,' Trotter shared. 'The Humane Society directly helps plan the outing, and we're more than happy to support them.
