A variance allowing a fence around the new Patton Park basketball court was approved last week by the Macomb Zoning Board of Appeals. The fence is six feet high as opposed to the standard three feet. Park Superintendent of Support Services Blake Severs said, 'It's a safety feature since the park is next to a roadway.'
Another fence height variance was granted to James Lavin at 905 North Albert Street. Explaining his need for a fence six feet high, Lavin told the board, 'My neighbor is a hoarder, and I need protection from things that blow off his property.' Community Development Director Miranda Lambert confirmed his story, saying the neighbor is the subject of several code enforcement complaints. She added that the fence height would have no negative impact on the neighborhood.
The zoning board also approved a variance allowing Nancy Hall to build a carport on her property at 433 South Johnson Street. Hall said she had a driveway built in April and wants to add a carport to protect her vehicle. Lambert produced a staff report indicating the belief that the carport would be an improvement to the neighborhood.
