Public Service Worry

Letter to the Editor,

There are many current governmental actions that worry me. Here's one that is hidden and has long-term impacts. I recommended a federal job to a recent college graduate and then read the application form President Trump now requires. As a past conservationist with USDA, working in Field Offices and Washington DC, I enjoy helping people find rewarding careers in federal public service. Well, no longer.

President Trump now requires job applicants to explain how they will 'advance the President’s Executive Orders and policy priorities.' This creates a partisan job requirement oblivious of understanding employees’ responsibilities. I guess that could include enacting policy priorities that go against the rule of law, even orders and policies yet to be proclaimed. It’s a blow to employee creativity and the collaborative nature of U.S. democracy. Say goodbye to increased productivity, enhanced creativity, better problem-solving, and compassionate services resulting from teamwork.

I worked under five presidents and had responsibilities to represent their programs.

While I did not agree with all their policies and initiatives, I remained true to the Oath I signed to 'support and defend the Constitution of the United States' and I implemented policies that conformed to the laws and the Constitution. The America I love taught me to think on my own and make decisions through collaborative processes.

I did not refrain from raising questions and engaging in discussions with colleagues and supervisors. It was my duty to be fair, honest, serve public needs, and comply with all laws.

It is not healthy for America when public service requires blind faith over common sense and the rule of law. Public service means serving the public not the president.

President Trump now requires service without question. He wants everyone to serve him above the Constitution, their communities and constituents, and possibly the Laws of the Land.

We need to stand for the rule of law not the whims of a President. Please pay attention and let your friends, families, and legislators know how you feel. Speak up and collaborate. Hope to see you at the next Chandler Park protest rally at noon, Saturday, June 14.
