On the back page of The Macomb Daily Journal, dated August 5, 1955, there appeared an article announcing the retirement of Macomb's oldest barber. He was 85 years old and said he thought it was time to retire.
But there was one thing holding him back. You see, the price of a haircut had just increased from 75 cents to a dollar, and he was having a hard time walking away from such prosperity!
My colleague and I have a lot in common. I started cutting hair in Rushville in 1955, at the age of 19. And I remember being just as thrilled when the price of haircuts went from 75 cents to a dollar!
Back in 2017, when I was 81 years old, I announced publicly, my plan to beat my colleagues record by at least five years and to celebrate my 90th birthday, I would give free haircuts on November 3, 2026 and retire.
Well, I've almost made it to 90. So here's my offer. On Tuesday, November 3, 2026--Election Day--I am going to celebrate my 90th birthday, the only way an old barber knows how: by keeping his word, and giving **FREE HAIRCUTS** to anyone brave enough to take a chance on me!
Now, I did mention that I might retire after reaching this milestone. Well, I have decided to renege on half of my promise!
**The haircuts are free, but retirement is off the table** So, if you're feeling brave, come on in Tuesday, November 3rd. Don't forget to call ahead and make an appointment at **309-837-3877** And if you're not quite that brave, stop by and wish me a **HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY** And if you don't have time to stop, just drive by and give me a honk!
After all, you only turn 90 once--and at my age every honk counts!
