MacArthur Early Childhood Center was the recipient of a grant funded by the Macomb Education Foundation and the Elementary PTO in the amount of $490 for sensory and fine motor items for the classrooms. Students are coming to school with more fine motor deficits and more sensory needs. The request was made to purchase more sensory items for students to be able to calm and to learn, and with the growing need for more fine motor development, items are needed as educators need multiple ways to help meet individual students grow in these areas.
Since each child is unique when it comes to sensory needs, it is helpful to have a variety of items for teachers to help each individual. Spinning, touching objects, squeezing objects, different colors and textures can all help students calm when they do not have the language to tell what they want/need.
The following items were purchased: writing tablets, Mr./Mrs. Potato Heads, rainbow stacking stones, stress balls, theraputty, bubble wall mirrors and two sensory spinning chairs with back support.
