Following folklore and “alternative traditions,” Kelley Martin, owner of the online custom craft and eclectic shop, 13 Broomsticks, is bringing back the “Christmas Witch” to Macomb to help area families in need during the holidays. Martin follows Wiccan and Pagan traditions, which are to help and serve others.
“During the traditional Yuletide season, which dates to before Christianity and Christmas, there are several legends surrounding the week of Christmas, including the Christmas Witch, a figure who appears in various European folklore traditions,” Martin explained. “In Italy, she’s known as Santa’s twin sister, and Frau Perchta in German and Austrian tradition visits homes during the 12 Days of Christmas. I want to help members of our community, while honoring my beliefs.”
Last year, Martin provided toys and traditional gifts, as well as hygiene and household items, to 12 area families.
“Some of what goes on behind the scenes is finding those families who haven’t been accepted to other areas programs because their kids have aged out or they’ve missed the deadlines or those families with zero income or having financial issues,” she explained. “ I also help senior citizens and shut-ins.”
Martin is now seeking sponsors to provide assistance to families who might need a little extra boost. Her goal is to help at least 12 families again this year, or more as “kindness and generosity allows.” For more information or to donate, message her through the 13 Broomsticks Facebook page, email [email protected] or call (217) 506-1530. A shopping list has been set up on Amazon at tinyurl.com/MacombXmasWitch26, with more to be added as the season draws closer. Ideas include any size clothing (children/teens); outdoor attire (hats, gloves, scarves); toys, coloring books, books for all ages; gift cards for games, food, etc.; wrapping paper, tape, tags and scissors, and monetary donations. Donation boxes, with a wish list, will also be set up at Spellbound Stories and Sullivan Taylor Uptown next month.
“No matter who you are or what you celebrate, let’s make this the true season of giving,” Martin concluded.
