The Western Illinois University School of Music is filling the upcoming weekend with a diverse showcase of brass chamber works, wind ensemble classics and vocal performances.
The musical slate kicks off Saturday, Oct. 10, with a Faculty Recital featuring French hornist Evan Goodson alongside guest performers at 1 p.m. in the COFAC Recital Hall.
Goodson will present an eclectic program spanning his original composition “Spill the T,” Gilbert Vinter's “Hunter's Moon,” and solo horn selections by Randall E. Faust and Douglas Hill. The performance also highlights collaborative chamber pieces, including Barbara York’s “Suite for Horn, Tuba and Piano” with tubist Logan Mitchell and pianist Heidi Brooks, as well as American folk song arrangements featuring guest hornist Randall Faust and pianist Christian Gonzales.
Later that evening, the WIU Wind Ensemble takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of conductor Dr. Mike Fansler. The ensemble’s program features landmark transcriptions and wind literature, including J.S. Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,” Morten Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium,” David Stanhope’s “Australian Fantasia” and Richard Wagner’s “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral.” The weekend wraps up Sunday, Oct. 11, at 3 p.m. with a Vocal Studio Recital showcasing students from the studio of Dr. Melissa Chavez. While admission is free, voluntary donations will be accepted at the door to benefit the WIU Counseling Center.
All performances take place in the School of Music Recital Hall, are free and open to the public, and will be live-streamed on the WIU School of Music You-Tube channel for off-campus listeners.
