Western Illinois University Dept. of Art & Design Hosts “First Wednesday”

According to Halloween tradition, wearing a mask can help ward off evil spirits. Well, if you’re in need of a mask—or just looking for a creative start to the spooky season—the Western Illinois University Department of Art and Design has got your face (and your back).

The department will host its monthly “First Wednesday' event Oct. 7 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., transforming Garwood Hall, the Heating Plant Annex, and the University Art Gallery into a hub of hands-on art activities, trivia, and open gallery hours.

Headlining the evening’s festivities in Garwood Hall is a Halloween Mask Drawing workshop led by Professor Tim Waldrop, utilizing the collaborative surrealist “Exquisite Corpse Method.” Nearby, Sherry Lindquist will host “The Inscrutable Skull,” an art historical scavenger hunt featuring prizes, while Professor Susan Czechowsky leads a screenprinted fall lantern session and Professor Ta-Teh Ku guides visitors through a Halloween miniature clay project alongside art education students.

Over at the Heating Plant Annex, attendees can try their hand at braided aluminum bracelet making with Professor Kat Myers or experience “Cosmic Wheel Throwing” with Professor Ian Shelly.
