Opposing Flock Cameras
I stand opposed to the rollout of an AI surveillance state via Flock cameras and similar technologies, and after reading the article published in the paper last week, Flock or Not, That’s the Question, I’d like to offer a simple counter to the arguments made in favor of these cameras.
What causes me the greatest alarm for the rationalization of these cameras is the disregard for the consent of the governed. 60% of Americans (Data For Progress) and 88% of Macombians do not approve of this technology. Governance is obliged to the consent of the governed. That is the single most important virtue the United States was born onto 250 years ago.
Surveillance states like China, who have adopted Skynet and social credit systems, monitor hundreds of thousands of citizens through facial recognition software, track their movements and use these technologies to blacklist citizens and oppress dissent of the government.
Being told what is good for us is paternalizing and unwelcome. Macombians don’t want these cameras. Abigail Nordstrom Macomb, IL
