First Presbyterian Church of Macomb will hold its annual fall rummage sale Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2-3, 400 E. Carroll St. Shoppers should use the church entrance on Dudley Street, and an elevator is available. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday.
On Friday, shoppers may fill provided paper bags with items from the Great Room for only $5. On Saturday, bags will be $1 and $2. Items too large for the bags and from the French and Better Room will be priced individually.
Organizer Rose Elam said proceeds from the sale benefit local and global missions. Unsold sale items will be given to area organizations. “This is a great way to recycle, fund worthy mission projects and pay forward our blessings,” said Elam.
The church’s rummage sale is a long-standing tradition with beginnings in the 1930s, when it was established to benefit those in the community and surrounding area. Planned and organized by the congregation’s Presbyterian Women and other volunteers, the sale offers good quality clothing, household items and furniture at low prices.
First Presbyterian Church of Macomb is the oldest church in the community, having been established in 1832 by 16 settlers, only one year after the town was established and six years after the designation of McDonough County. The church’s legacy of commitment to Jesus Christ has continued for nearly 200 years, growing together in God’s abundant grace. Welcoming all people, the church is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church U.S.A., and is a “Matthew 25” church, pledging to serve marginalized and vulnerable people as inspired by Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 25: 31-46.
All are welcome to attend traditional Sunday worship at 10 am, either in person or through the YouTube link shared weekly on the church’s Facebook page. Worship is led by the church’s pastor, the Rev. Dr. Cheyanna Losey, assisted by lay leaders, and the service is enhanced by choral and congregational singing, as well as organ, piano and other instrumental music.
The church shares its facilities with many community organizations, including Giving Gardens, Prairieland Barbershop Chorus, Rotary Club of Macomb, Frontline Foster Family Foundation and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). The impressive pipe organ and piano are used by the American Guild of Organists and for private lessons.
