MDH Continues Billing Overhaul, Discovers Additional Savings, Reports Fundraising Efforts

The McDonough District Hospital Board of Directors met on Sept. 21 for its monthly meeting and spoke positively about the direction the Hospital is going in terms of resolving revenue cycle issues, replacing a CEO and other topics. Ryan Riggins, Board Finance Chair, quoting from a Chinese proverb, ‘If you wanna go fast, go alone. And if you wanna go far, go together.’ I’m sure you’ve heard it, but I can’t speak for the whole board, but it’s nice when things go well and fast, but it’s more important that they go well.” This echoing Board Chair, Dan O’Neill’s remarks, “We just want what’s best for the community.”

Revenue Cycle Transformation

Macomb District Hospital is currently undertaking one of its most ambitious operational transformations in years, attacking a fundamental problem: the hospital has not been billing accurately for services it provides identifying thousands of unbilled services and restructuring revenue cycle operations.

In a sweeping revenue cycle initiative, chaired by the Director of Laboratory Services Brittany Doll, hospital leaders are reorganizing how the organization charges for everything from bedside ultrasounds to complex surgical procedures.

The effort involves 25 separate work streams and has already identified over 1,500 patient charts waiting for coding—charts that cannot generate revenue until they are processed.
