James Richard “Dick” Vannice, 98, of Canton, formerly of Indiana and Macomb passed away at 8:20 p.m. Sunday, September 13, 2026 at his daughter and son-in-law, Becki and Jay Flickinger’s home. He was born on June 22, 1928 in Darlington, Indiana to James H. and Dorcas Butler Vannice. He first married Shirley Hankins. She passed away on September 18, 2013. He later married Helen Brown on February 28, 2017. She survives.
Also surviving are his children; Becki (Jay) Flickinger of Canton, IL, Kim Vannice of Franklin, IN and Bruce (Susan) Vannice of Waterloo, IL; two step-children, Nick (Dusti) Hamilton of Greensburg, IN and Heather (Harve) Haunert of Georgia; eight grandchildren, Brent (Erica) Flickinger, Blake (Lauren) Flickinger, Brad (Lillian) Vannice, Ryan Vannice, Nicholas (Christey) Vannice, Stacy (Ty) Dickinson, Justin (Addie) Vannice and Branden (Ashley) Vannice; three step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Nancy (Lynn Adams) Brown and Judy Lozier; one brother-in-law Carlos Brown and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Shirley and one son, Kirt Vannice and brother, Jere Vannice.
Dick graduated from Darlington High School in 1946 along with 12 others. He married his sweetheart September 14, 1948 in Carrollton, KY. Dick graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture, with a bit of type writing help from Shirley with his thesis.
