Designing Women Move Business to the Square

Designing Women Move Business to the Square
Jami Miller, left, and Jenna Van Hove, recently opened J&J Designs on the Macomb square.

A small business that began as a creative outlet for a Macomb woman recently moved from the back of her husband’s shop to a more visible spot on Macomb’s square. A new partnership with an old friend has increased J&J Designs’ visibility and merchandise lineup.

Several years ago, Jami Miller purchased two used industrial embroidery machines.

“I told my husband I wanted to do that,” she said after learning the devices were available. “I love crafty stuff.” The machines were placed in a spare room at Midwest Upfitters, Jason Miller’s custom automotive and lighting business on North Lafayette Street. The embroidery business grew to include design transfers on T-shirts, sweatshirts, caps and bags and the backroom became too small.

Two months ago, Miller and longtime friend Jenna Van Hove decided to work together on the new business venture. The “soft” opening for the store was Aug. 18. The Macomb Chamber of Commerce’s ribbon-cutting ceremony at 116 N. Side Square is scheduled at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 18, and grand-opening activities will continue the following day.

J&J Designs embroiders and transfers custom designs onto shirts, sweatshirts, hats, bandanas and bags. It also designs Koozies and tumblers. The women use a process called DTF – direct to film transfer – to apply designs using heat.
