Our popular, long-term mayor is also an authority on some Macomb historic sites, and one of them is our attractive City Hall, where his is office is located. As I know well, for several years Mayor Inman has given tours of that multi-faceted site to school children who participate in the annual downtown activities for Local History Day. On Monday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m., he will deliver a visual presentation and commentary about that site for the general public, at the Spoon River College Outreach Center.
It will feature dozens of illustrations focused on that building’s significance—as an upscale home in the 1920s, then a medical clinic, a World War II USO Center, and long-time Macomb City Hall, which was renovated under the direction of Mayor Tom Caper in 20002001. Inman's discussion will feature not only the building’s many distinctive architectural features but a host of photographs exhibited in the halls and rooms there, which reflect our community’s heritage.
The program, titled “A Walk with Mayor Inman through Macomb’s Historic City Hall,” is sponsored by the McDonough County Historical Society, and people from throughout the community and county are invited to attend. It will be yet another contribution to our celebration of McDonough County’s Bicentennial this year. Soft drinks and snacks will also be available at the program.
Historical Society president Larry Zigler will welcome the audience, and noted author and speaker on Illinois history John Hallwas will introduce the popular mayor (who was born in Macomb) and his program on this often underappreciated Macomb historic site.
As with so many Historical Society programs, this one will also be a great opportunity to interact with many other residents who have a commitment to our local cultural experience.
