It is Laor Day weekend. Summers last fling. Colchester has a great Labor Day celebration with food, entertainment, flea markets, a parade and more. There is also the Argyle Gas Engine show at Argyle Lake and this year a new event was added-Highland games. I hope this will continue as it looked like fun to watch. Had to get back to Plymouth to open my store but would have liked to have seen more of the games. Great to see the events at Argyle Lake growing again.
Usual weeks activities-closed out month at store, Full Scoop in Colchester for ice cream with friends, finance meeting at church, a racoon in the kitty house and more. A big thank you to Adams for the yearly meeting. The vote to join Adams and Mid Century passed. Adams furnish a nice meal and some really great prizes for their customers.
Had new guests at the store on Friday. They came from Missouri to shop. Was happy to meet them. Also had a dealer stop by on Thursday who got lots of goodies for his store. Some items will go to his Texas store too. I meet really nice people in the antique business.
Perhaps one should never mention politics but it is hard not to in today’s divided world. There is such a wide gap in income with the top 1% of the population having as much wealth as the bottom 90%. One has to wonder what is gained by having “all the money in the world” and acting like we are going to live forever. We are not. I believe there is a story about this in the Bible where a man tears down his barns and builds bigger and better ones only to die.
There is a sign in Plymouth which says “Vote Blue, higher taxes, socialism and eventually communism” if I remember correctly. Many complain about paying taxes. Personally, I like decent roads, schools, libraries, fire protection, help for the needy and so much more. Then there is socialism. If you ask Google, what socialism is you will get many answers. Some are long and complicated-some are short and to the point. Basically, it seems that socialism is “an economy which aims to provide basic human needs like healthcare, housing, and education rather than only private profit”. If a business is to stay in business, it has to maintain a certain profit, I understand that. What I find troubling is that we are currently taking away the safety net for so many people. Healthcare premiums have risen, food programs have lost funding, funds for education have been cut, child care funds will be restricted to only married couples if our leaders prevail. It is the single parent who needs help the most in many cases. We need to do better. If you do not believe in socialism then you certainly should NOT ACCEPT checks for farm subsidies, social security, SSI, unemployment insurance, Medicare and more!
Hopefully we can embrace the end of summer and the start of fall. Fall brings so many wonderful things-cooler temperatures, beautiful leaves, Thanksgiving and the Spoon River Drive!
