The Western Illinois Museum (WiM) announces the launch of its Youth Advisory Council, a new initiative inviting young people ages 16 to 24 to help shape how the museum documents, presents, and preserves history for the next generation. An informational meeting will be held at the museum on Saturday, September 12, at 11:00. A pizza lunch will be served.
The Youth Advisory Council will work directly alongside WiM staff and board members to plan exhibits, develop public programs, record oral histories, and create classroom-ready materials for local teachers.
The council reflects the museum's belief that history is not a fixed record, but a living conversation, one that belongs to everyone, including the generation now coming of age.
'History belongs to all of us,' said Sue Scott of the Western Illinois Museum.
'We wanted to create a real seat at the table for young people, not just as an audience for our exhibits, but as the people helping to build them. Gen Z is already shaping culture right now, and we want that voice reflected in how we tell our region's story.'
Council members will meet monthly and take an active role in museum programming from the ground up, contributing ideas, perspectives, and creative direction on projects designed by and for young adults. No prior museum or historical experience is required; WiM is looking for participants who bring curiosity, honesty, and a willingness to share their point of view.
'This is about amplifying the voice of young adults,' added Carter Myers, WiM’s Engagement Coordinator, who will lead the council.
'Too often, young adults are talked about instead of talked with. The Youth Advisory Council changes that. We're asking Gen Z to help document the culture we’re living through, in real time.'
Who Can Join
The Youth Advisory Council is open to emerging adults ages 16 to 24 in the McDonough County area.
No experience is necessary, just interest and a willingness to participate in monthly meetings.
How to Get Involved Interested individuals are encouraged to attend the launch meeting on Saturday, September 12th at 11:00 am. This meeting will cover the council's goals, what time commitment is involved, and the next steps for joining.
