Another column about Plymouth Old Settlers-hope you don’t mind.
The 140th Plymouth Old Settlers was a great success! We all owe a great big thank you to Donny Miller and Kimmy Vallier and all the people who put so much work into this event. There was a huge red flashing sign on the corner which said Plymouth Old Settlers and God Bless America. That was a great touch.
I cannot tell you about all the events but can tell you about some of them. The carnival came in on Monday and spent much of the week setting up. There were also bounce houses. I think all the young people really enjoyed these. There were a variety of vendors in the park some of which I thought were very creative.
One cannot say enough about the food. The hog roast was excellent and very well-attended. The fish and chicken dinner was restaurant quality or better! I believe there were restaurant cooks helping with the dinner. There were also booths with funnel cakes, corn dogs, lemonade shakes-ups, food shack, dessert stands and more. One could have just made a weekend of eating.
New last year was a fireworks display on Friday evening. This year’s display was lovely and is a great addition to all the entertainment. Southern Rail performed on the stage on Friday evening. By having great entertainment, fireworks and good food on Friday what was once a one-day celebration on Thursday has become a great three-day event.
Saturday was a fun-packed day. Gary Hurt chaired a large and interesting car show. There were cars, trucks and motorcycles parked both on the Square and down west Maine street. The Legion had a great breakfast which was so well attended that they ran out of a lot of food items. The parade had a lot of entries and more floats than in past years.
Sunday started with a church service in the park hosted by the First Baptist Church of Plymouth. It was very nice and well attended. After the service there was lunch provided for everyone. Pies took center stage on Sunday with a pie baking contest and a silent auction of pies. I understand there was even an apple bacon pie which sounds interesting. There was also a tractor show to include those who love tractors. I think that the variety which the committee includes is a strong point of Old Settlers. There were also many activities for the kids in the park on Sunday.
Just a really BIG THANK YOU to all who worked so long and hard to raise the funds needed to put on this event. It is a yearlong commitment for a few. Also, thanks to those who did important things like cleanup which we don’t really notice but certainly would if they did not do it. The 140th was a huge success. Thanks to all who had a part in it and to those who came and enjoyed it.
