The West Prairie High School varsity volleyball team opened its season Tuesday evening by defeating visiting Monmouth United 25-22, 21-25, 25-20.
Josie Hodges paced the offense, recording 27 set assists, along 17 service points that included two service aces.
Niah Zimmerman tallied 17 kills, while Alyvia Barkley added four. Payton McGrew and Ashlynn Kelley chipped in three kills each.
Defensively, the team finished with 44 digs, led by Barkley with 11, Kamara Zimmerman with 10 and Madison McClure with eight.
The Cyclones JV squad dropped its match against the Red Storm by scores of 25-22, 25-15.
West Prairie was slated to return to action Thursday, hosting Havana in Prairieland Conference South Division play.
On Saturday, the Cyclones head to Macomb to take part in the Macomb Volleyball Classic Invitational Tournament.
The tournament is being held at Brophy Hall on the Western Illinois University campus.
In pool play, West Prairie will face Peoria Notre Dame at 8 a.m., Rockridge at 10 a.m. and Ridgewood at noon.
Following pool play, West Prairie will play two additional matches, one at 3:15 p.m. and the other at either 4:15 p.m. or 5:15 p.m.
The Cyclones will then head to Augusta on Sept. 1 to begin competition in the Lady Suns Classic.
West Prairie will start pool play with a match against Mendon Unity at 4 p.m.
