The Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting Wednesday, August 26, at Western Illinois University Hanson Field to mark the completion of a new synthetic turf installation ahead of the 2026 football season for Western Illinois Athletics.
The project replaces the previous turf surface, which had reached the end of its expected useful life. The updated field design features the Rocky Head mascot logo and Ohio Valley Conference logos.
SprinTurf LLC was selected as the contractor following a competitive bidding process. The company has installed more than 3,500 fields nationwide.
The new turf provides an updated playing surface for Leatherneck student- athletes and is expected to serve the field for the coming years. The project also includes improvements to the overall look of Hanson Field as the Leathernecks prepare for the 2026 season.
Funding for the project came through resources generated by Leatherneck Athletics, including support from the WIU Football Player Enhancement Fund.
“We are thankful for everything our student-athletes and coaches have given to help make this project a reality,” said Jeremy Robinett, Acting Administrator in Charge of Athletics.
“Their efforts are creating a lasting improvement that will benefit current and future student-athletes while also enhancing the experience for the many campus and community members who utilize Hanson Field.”
Head Football Coach Joe Davis said the new surface is part of ongoing improvements to Hanson Field, with student-athlete health and safety remaining a priority.
The Leathernecks will play host to six home games at Hanson Field during the 2026 season, plus numerous Marching Leatherneck and student organization activities.
