Glass Recyling Bin Reminder
Thanks to the work of many individuals and groups, Macomb and the surrounding area has the opportunity to recycle glass knowing that those bottles, jars, and windows (hardware removed) can be reused. Congratulations to the many who have participated in keeping over 41 tons of glass out of our landfill by depositing glass in the purple bin in the Farm King parking lot. This exceeds our expectations and shows the commitment of the community to recycle our resources.
This bin is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and most have abided by the posted accepted items listed on the bin. This past week, however, someone decided it was simply a dumpster. Over 15 large bags of garbage had to be removed from the bin.
It states clearly on the purple bin: No bags or boxes. Glass only. Also posted it says: no cardboard, no trash bags, no porcelain, ceramic, milk glass or china, no mirrors, no laminated glass/windshields, no Pyrex/Corningware, dishware, lightbulbs, or TV screens. It does not state on the bin, but common sense would prohibit depositing food waste, aluminum cans, tin cans, small tools and appliances. All of those things were found in the glass recycling receptacle and had to be removed.
Misuse of the glass recycling bin is a disservice to the whole community. Someone has to remove it, and it takes valuable space for recyclable glass. If the bin is used inappropriately, it could jeopardize the glass recycling program all together. This would be a loss of a common good for our community.
