The Macomb High boys golf team finished fifth out of 16 teams at the 52nd annual Gary Saunders Invitational held Saturday at the Macomb Country Club.
The Bombers posted a team score of 335, 51 strokes over par.
Junior Sam Helling led the way for MHS, finishing 18th overall with a score of 79 (eight over par).
Sophomore Eli Griffith was 27th with an 83, followed by junior Luke Chapla (37th, 86) and junior Kollin Knupp (41st, 87).
The scores of freshmen Ryker Allensworth (48th, 88) and Cohen Anderson (64th, 91) did not count toward the team total.
Also golfing for MHS as individuals were freshman Brady DeWeese (77th, 97) and sophomore Lauren Young (85th, 100).
Effingham St. Anthony captured top team honors with a score of 294 (10 over par).
Illini West was second at 306, followed by Rochester (321), Metamora (333) and MHS.
Following the Bombers in the team standings were Pleasant Plains (336), Bloomington Central Catholic (339), Limestone (340), Rock Island Alleman (340), Davenport Assumption (346), Illini Bluffs (349), North Mac (353), Carlinville (355), Geneseo (360), Canton (394) and Monmouth-Roseville (560).
St. Anthony sophomores James Trupiano and Logan Gowin topped the 100-player field, shooting even par 71s.
Trupiano won medalist honors in a playoff.
The Bomber JV boys and girls are slated to host Bushnell-Prairie City at the Macomb Country Club on Aug. 27 before the varsity heads to Gibson Woods in Monmouth on Aug. 28 to play in the Titan Invitational.
