Western Illinois University's Office of Public Safety (OPS) will host R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) Women's Self-Defense Training beginning this month, which gives female participants the practical skills and confidence through a comprehensive 12-hour program. The event is open free to female students, faculty and staff, as well as community members.
The free training will take place from 5-8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning Aug 24. Sessions will be held Aug. 24, Aug. 26, Aug. 31 and Sept. 2, with another session beginning Nov. 2, with classes on Nov. 4, Nov. 9 and Nov. 11.
The classes, taught by OPS R.A.D.-trained officers, will be held in the University Union Capitol Room.
R.A.D. is a nationally recognized self-defense course designed to provide participants with real-world techniques through hands-on practical training. Participants who complete the course are eligible for the lifetime return-andpractice policy, allowing them to retake the training at no cost anywhere the program is offered worldwide.
'I took this class several years ago, and while I've taken other self-defense-style courses over the years, this remains one of the best,' said one participant. 'I still remember many of the tips, moves and information.'
