Celene Cross, 61, of Macomb, passed away on August 5, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness.
She was the daughter of Ron and Jeanne Cross, the loving mother of Sky Cross, and the longtime partner of Troy Ausbury. She is also survived by her sister, Kelly Lanz; one aunt; one uncle; three cousins; and many other loved ones.
Celene was a graduate of Macomb High School and Western Illinois University. Bright, curious and passionate from an early age, she participated enthusiastically in 4-H, the Macomb High School Band and Junior Achievement. She worked at McDonald’s during high school and at Wendy’s throughout college.
After college, Celene worked for the Illinois Department of Alcohol and Substance Abuse in Springfield before returning to Macomb. She became involved in political campaigns and supported candidates including Lane Evans, Bill Edley and Bernie Sanders. She also greatly enjoyed working for attorney John Bisbee.
Celene was a lifelong learner and a true free spirit. Whatever captured her interest, she pursued with energy, curiosity and conviction. In 1992, she opened her own business, Spirit in the Sky, named after the song that reflected her independent spirit and now offers her loved ones a meaningful reminder of where her spirit has gone.
Celene met Troy in 2014 when he came to repair the foundation of her home. What began as one project soon became many more, and the beginning of a life they would build together over the next 12 years. Along the way, they purchased two additional homes in Adair and shared a love of projects, possibilities and creating something together.
Celene loved her daughter, Sky, deeply and continued to do her best for her through every stage of life. Their relationship was shaped by love, growth and an enduring bond.
Near the end of her life, Celene joined the Church of Christ. She leaned into faith, forgiveness and belief, finding comfort and meaning in each.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Chalmers and Madaline Cross and Lucille and Edwin Hogan, as well as her uncle, Ralph Hogan.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Dodsworth Funeral Home in Macomb, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.
