Following a six-year hiatus, the Macomb Police Department is bringing back its 10-week 'Citizens Police Academy' beginning Sept. 17.
Created in 2016, by Chief Curt Barker and Lt. Jason York, the program, which is available at no cost to up to 15 participants, provides an in-depth and personal look at the local department, as well as hands-on instruction. Classes are held on Thursdays through Nov. 25 from 6-9 p.m. Registration is required. The application, which is due by Sept. 13, can be completed at tinyurl.com/MPDCitizensAcademy2026.
Participants must be 18 years of age, and must reside, work or attend school in Macomb. A background check will be conducted for all applicants.
Topics covered during the program include hiring and field training processes, crime scene processing, K-9 unit, strategic response teams and more.
“The Citizens Police Academy gives members of our community an opportunity to see firsthand what policing looks like in Macomb. Participants get to know our officers, learn why we do what we do and experience many of the situations and decisions our officers encounter every day,' said MPD Chief Todd Tedrow. 'Just as importantly, it gives us an opportunity to listen to our citizens, answer their questions and build relationships outside of an enforcement setting.'
