Winner’s Sweet Corn - A Proven Winner
“August is ripening grain in the fields blowing hot and sunny, the scent of tree-ripened peaches, of hot buttered sweet corn on the cob. Vivid dahlias fling huge tousled blossoms through gardens and joe-pye-weed dusts the meadow purple”. Jean Hersey Aaron Winner of Rushville staggers his plantings so he can have sweet corn for most of the summer. His Obsession II corn is extremely popular with local residents as it is known to be the sweetest variety.
Winner is retired and has been selling sweet corn for 8-10 years. He donates much of his product to charities and enjoys doing so. Growing sweet corn to Aaron is more of a hobby than a money maker - he utilizes the help of his grandkids some but doesn’t want to interfere with their sports activities in the summer.
Winner broke his ankle at the beginning of the season, which would have been a major setback to many produce growers. But Winner devised a 30-inch wide lawn mower, complete with an umbrella, to allow him to continue his work. The narrow mower allowed him to maneuver up and down the rows to work and to produce a bumper crop of the corn the midwesterners crave in the summertime.
