Can you believe July is pretty much over. School sports are back in action. The band is rehearsing. Traveling is likely done. Summer is almost completed.
In 1989 the band Soul II Soul released the hit Back to Life. The song opens with the words Back to life, Back to reality (3x), Back to the here and now. Isn’t that what summer’s end seems to bring? That somehow, no matter our age or profession, summer is a more carefree, less duty filled time of year. As summer winds down and school starts back up, the family schedule renews its flurry of studies and activities and earlier bedtimes.
The three verses of this classic open with these lines: v.
1 Back to life, Back to reality…v. 2 Back to life, Back to the present time…v. 3 Back to life, Back to the day we have. It feels to me like Soul II Soul is trying to take us on a trip.
The song progresses from the angst of letting go of that time that was less than realistic, more carefree if you will, to a time that is more focused—whether that is for the better or not. These first two verses are a redirection of thoughts and priorities.
