Evelyn and her twin sister, Dorothy, were born June 24, 1937 to James Thomas and Della Hunter.
The proud hometown girl grew up in Monroe City, Mo. Her strong work ethic started early. At age 11, she began working at the local movie theater after school and on weekends. This was during the infamous golden age of Hollywood. She continued through graduation. In 1955, she graduated third in her class, and was named D.A.R. Good Citizen.
After graduating, she was chosen to be the secretary to the superintendent of schools, which she considered her dream job. It is there that she met Bob Cook, who was hired to be the high school social studies teacher. When Bob decided to pursue a Ph.D. from St. Louis University, they were married and off to the big city. She said she always very much felt like a country mouse that went to the big city.
Evelyn will always be remembered for being a devoted wife and mother. That friend who never lets you down.
The welcoming smile, and the smile in her voice. Kindness, compassion, and selflessness were part of the soundtrack to her life. Along with never demeaning others, and treating others as you would like to be treated. If you want to make the world a better place, play the Evelyn soundtrack on repeat.
Preceding her in death were sisters: Daisy, Ruth, and Minnie Rockwood. Brothers: James Thomas, Bill, Jim Rockwood, and Charles Rockwood.
Surviving are her twin sister Dorothy, son Joe, and daughter Amy.
Honoring her wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the new shelter fund at the McDonough County Humane Society.
