It is a burn, baby, burn summer out there, but local families have one last chance to find a cool escape before the school bells ring again.
VIP Rialto Cinemas, located at 1405 E. Jackson St. in Macomb, is hosting the final stretch of its annual Summer Family Flicks series, offering a budget-friendly way to beat the heat. The theater is screening the final three animated blockbusters of its 10-week season on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.
Admission is $2 per person for all ages. To sweeten the morning, VIP Rialto Cinemas is offering a $5 Kid’s Combo from opening until noon on show days. Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis at the box office, though online booking is available with additional fees. The final three features coming to the Macomb screen include: “The Wild Robot” (July 21–23): The home stretch begins with a touching tale of technology meeting nature. When an intelligent robot named Roz is shipwrecked on a remote, uninhabited island, she must adapt to the harsh wilderness to survive. The film follows Roz as she slowly earns the trust of the island’s native animals and adopts an orphaned baby goose, building an unexpected family in the wild. The film is rated PG and runs 102 minutes.
“The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants” (July 28–30): Who hangs out on a pirate ship under the sea. SpongeBob SquarePants? Desperate to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs and show he is a 'big guy,' Bikini Bottom's favorite resident sets off on a seafaring quest. SpongeBob follows the Flying Dutchman—a mysterious, swashbuckling ghost pirate—into a deep-sea adventure that takes him to dangerous depths where no sponge has gone before. The film is rated PG and runs 88 minutes.
“Despicable Me 4” (August 4–6): The summer program concludes with the latest chapter in the Gru family saga. Gru and Lucy, along with their daughters Margo, Edith, and Agnes, welcome a new family member: Gru Jr., a baby who takes great pleasure in tormenting his father. The domestic chaos escalates when a new nemesis, Maxime Le Mal, and his femme fatale girlfriend, Valentina, escape prison, forcing the entire Gru clan—and their loyal Minions—to go on the run. The film is rated PG and runs 94 minutes.
