A Never Forget Garden was dedicated Saturday in Macomb to honor military sacrifice and mark the 200th anniversary of McDonough County.
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Chapter General Macomb, planted the garden last year at the American Legion Post 6 entrance, 221 E. Washington St., so flowers would be in full bloom for the June 27 dedication ceremony.
The project grew from DAR member Connie Mohr's visit to a similar garden in Arizona. She brought the idea to the local chapter, and American Legion Post 6 offered its property.
'A soldier never dies unless he is forgotten,' reads the garden's inscription.
The dedication opened with the military Honor Guard and 'The Star Spangled Banner.' State Rep. Dan Swanson, Mayor Mike Inman and American Legion Past Commander Larry Zigler spoke. Regent Eileen Worthington presented Mohr with a special recognition certificate for her role in bringing the garden to Macomb.
Mohr's knowledge of flower gardening shaped the garden's design and upkeep.
