McDonough County Court June Updates

Numerous Pre-Trial Check-Ins Took Place June 23

In addition to the detention hearing for Decory Coleman, Jr., 25, of Chicago, who is being held on unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery after he allegedly shot another man June 22, numerous other individuals appeared in front of McDonough County Circuit Court Judge Nigel Graham Tuesday, June 23.

Edward Anderson

Anderson, 49, of 88 Murphy Road, will continue being held in the McDonough County Jail per Judge Graham. Anderson, who appeared June 23, faces 10 counts after he allegedly deliberately rammed his vehicle into a McDonough County Sheriff deputy's squad car following an incident near 84 Murphy Road in Bushnell during the early evening hours of March 21.

Anderson has been charged by the Illinois State Police with attempted battery with a deadly weapon, attempted aggravated battery of a peace officer, driving under the influence of alcohol and criminal damage to state property $10,000-$100,000, and by the Bushnell Police Department (BPD) with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, resisting a police officer, domestic battery, aggravated battery and aggravated fleeing and eluding. At that March 21 incident, McDonough County Deputy Katie Norton is credited with saving the lives of several rescue personnel who were at the scene when she positioned her squad car to stop Anderson's vehicle from hitting the ambulance on the scene.

During last Tuesday's hearing, it was determined this case was not ready for trial and was continued to Aug. 4.

Shaking Mathis

Mathis, 40, appeared on two separate charges. In February 2026, Mathis was arrested on two counts of sexual assault by force stemming from Sept. 4, 2024. He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault and requested a jury trial. He has remained detained in the local jail since September 2024.

On Sept. 4, 2024, Mathis allegedly shot two police officers who were attempting to serve a warrant. Former Macomb Police Department Det. Nick Severs (who is now with the Illinois State Police) and MPD Sgt. J.P. McLaughlin were attempting to serve a search warrant in connection with a reported sexual assault. In connection with the shooting incident, he is charged with four counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon. Mathis has pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial. Following extensive negotiations and a 20-hour standoff with law enforcement, Mathis, of 309 N. Normal St., surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody around 2:30 p.m. Sept. 5.

In the sexual assault case, the public defender told the court that his client was not ready for trial. In the shooting incident, his attorney, Michael Gerard, also told the court that Mathis is not yet ready for a trial on these charges. Mathis is scheduled for an Aug. 4 pre-trial hearing on both cases.

Graham determined his continued detention was necessary.

Christopher Metcalf

Metcalf, 44, was arrested Nov. 26, 2024 at his Macomb home in the 200 block of North Sherman Avenue and charged with disseminating child pornography through an online platform and six counts of possession of child pornography. He has pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial. At the June 23 hearing, Public Defender Scott Terry told the court that his client was not yet ready for trial, and the case was continued to Aug. 4.

Graham ruled that Metcalf 's detention remained necessary. Edgar Salazar-Gutierrez, Jr.,

The case of Salazar-Gutierezz, Jr, 19, of Hoffman Estates, who has been charged with disorderly conduct, aggravated battery of a child and criminal sexual abuse, will continue to an Aug. 4 pre-trial conference. During the late afternoon hours of March 16, Macomb Police were called to a business in the 1400 block of East Jackson Street following a report of a man who had inappropriately touched a 15-year-old female.

The suspect, later identified as Salazar-Gutierrez, Jr., admitted to the act, and that he entered the business specifically to grope one of the female juveniles in the business. Salazar-Gutierrez, Jr. has pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial. He is currently not in custody.

Jeremy Sholl

Sholl, 43, of Galesburg, who faces felony charges of two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child (Class X felony); two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse (Class 2 felony), and two counts of criminal sexual assault (Class 1 felony), is currently being held in the McDonough County Jail, with a new pre-trial date set for Aug. 4. Public Defender Scott Terry told the court that his office has gone through the majority of discovery.

Sholl has pleaded not guilty to the alleged crimes against two female minors and requested a jury trial. He was arrested by McDonough County Sheriff 's Office deputies and Illinois State Police Zone 4 special agents Feb. 11 in his Galesburg home. The allegations against Sholl came to light in late 2025 when he allegedly texted a third party about his conduct, and the messages provided a detailed account of what he did. The incidents reportedly took place from November 2011 to December 2012, against two female relatives with whom he resided at the time who were eight years old, and again over a four-month span in 2018, when the children were between 13-17. Graham determined his continued detention was necessary.
