Remembering Ray Peterson

The Macomb Park District is saddened by the passing of former Executive Director Ray Peterson.

Ray began his career with the Macomb Park District in June 1976 and dedicated more than 40 years of service to the citizens of Macomb and the surrounding area.

In October 1988, he became the District’s second executive director, a position he held until his retirement in December 2016.

Throughout his career, Ray played a significant role in the growth and development of the Macomb Park District. His leadership helped shape parks, facilities, programs, and services that continue to benefit our community today. He was a passionate advocate for parks and recreation and believed strongly in the value of public service.

Beyond the facilities and programs he helped develop, Ray worked to preserve the history and institutional knowledge of the Macomb Park District so that future generations could better understand the decisions, challenges, and successes that shaped the organization. Ray was also a dedicated mentor to countless professionals throughout his career. He invested in the growth of young staff members, encouraged leadership development, and took pride in helping others build successful careers in parks and recreation. His influence extended far beyond the Macomb Park District through the many individuals whose lives and careers he helped shape.

On behalf of the Board of Commissioners and staff, we extend our sincere condolences to Ray’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched through his decades of service.

His contributions to the Macomb Park District and our community will not be forgotten.
