Western Illinois Museum Screening Documentary Film “Story & Pictures By” This Sunday
The Western Illinois Museum invites the community to an afternoon of film, food, and conversation with a screening of the award-winning documentary Story & Pictures By on Sunday, June 7, from 3:30 to 6:00 pm at the Museum.
More than a film about children’s books, Story & Pictures By explores the creative process behind picture books and the powerful role reading plays in shaping how children understand themselves and the world around them. Following the screening, guests are invited to stay for Larry A’s pizza, dessert, and conversation. A suggested $5 donation will be collected at the door. The film runs approximately 84 minutes and is not rated.
This event is the second in the Museum’s film series exploring how literacy serves as a gateway to discovering, sharing, and expanding knowledge. Through reading, writing, and critical thinking, literacy helps people move beyond simply consuming information to actively engaging with ideas and experiences.
Story & Pictures By is the first feature-length documentary to take audiences behind the scenes with the authors and illustrators who create contemporary children’s picture books. The film follows Christian Robinson, Yuyi Morales, and Mac Barnett, three influential bookmakers helping shape a new “golden age” of children’s literature, as they create imaginative work that reflects the complexities of childhood, champions marginalized voices, and offers children both “windows and mirrors” into human experience.
Through rare archival materials and interviews, the documentary also introduces audiences to earlier innovators who expanded the possibilities of picture-book storytelling and examines why beloved classics continue to resonate across generations.
