This month’s “Final Friday” at The Wine Sellers (TWS), which will be held May 29 with local musician Bill Maakestad and friends, will raise funds for Habitat for Humanity of McDonough County.
The May “Final Friday” will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. On the last Friday of each month, the man behind the mike (and guitar) plays at The Wine Sellers – sometimes solo, sometimes joined by other local musicians – and plays for donations for local organizations. Since starting this initiative in 2020, Maakestad and The Wine Sellers, owned by Craig and Julia Burns of Macomb, have raised over $25,000 for 28 area nonprofits, ranging from local food pantries, social service programs, public radio, the humane society and education, among many other organizations.
At Friday’s event, Angel McCoy, executive director of the local nonprofit, will provide an overview of H4H’s activity in the region, including an update on homes currently under construction. Maakestad will be joined by The Soulsters, featuring Jim Betts on guitar, Pete Hannen on sax and Brett Dougherty on bass.
According to McCoy, who recently presented to Rotary Club of Macomb, Habitat for Humanity is always in need of volunteers. The organization currently has a few properties that need additional work to be ready for families. In addition to cash donations, the local group can sometimes also accept building material donations.
“We would love to be connected to people in the trades, whether currently working or retired,” McCoy explained. “We really need certain projects to be done by or done under the supervision of trained professionals. These include plumbing, electrical, HVAC, roofing and natural gas. If you know of any professionals in these areas who would be willing to donate their expertise for a good cause, please have them reach out to me.”
