The Macomb High duo of junior Reid Carson and sophomore Sam Helling will soon be fishing for an Illinois High School Association state title.
In IHSA Bass Fishing sectional competition held May 21 at the Mississippi River (Pool 13), the Bomber duo finished 10th with a total weight of 8.07 pounds of caught fish (there is a limit of five fish allowed).
That effort allowed Carson and Helling to grab the final qualifying spot in advancing to the IHSA State Finals, scheduled for June 5-6 at Lake Shelbyville.
The MHS duo advanced to sectional competition by placing fifth in regional competition held May 14 at the Mississippi River (Pool 18), recording a total weight of 9.21 pounds of caught fish.
Bass Fishing has been a recognized activity by the IHSA since 2009.
State series competition begins with 30 regionals held throughout Illinois when up to the top six teams on the basis of total weight of caught fish advance to sectional competition.
Six sectionals are then held with up to the top 10 teams advancing to the state finals.
Head coach for the Bomber Bass Fishing Team is Rich Helling, while Tim Kipling serves as the boat’s driver.
