Spartans Lose At Unity; Walk Away With Win Over Patriots

The Bushnell-Prairie City High School softball team entered the final week of regular season play Tuesday, dropping a 22-2 decision to host Mendon Unity in four innings.

B-PC scored twice in the first without the benefit of a hit.

Mylee Chenoweth walked with one out and moved to second on a passed ball. Triniti Williams walked to put runners on first and second.

Chenoweth moved to third on a passed ball before Williams advanced to second on defensive indifference.

Jayden Johnson grounded out to pitcher Brooke Hickey, but Chenoweth scored for B-PC with Williams reaching third.

Williams scored on a wild pitch by Hickey with Josie Farwell at the plate.

Unity answered in the bottom of the inning, sending 18 batters to plate, scoring 14 runs.

The inning included seven hits, including two doubles, five walks and three errors.

The Mustangs went on to add five runs in the second and three more in the game, finishing with 10 hits.

B-PC committed nine errors that led to 14 unearned runs for Unity.

Johnson pitched one inning, allowing 14 runs, eight earned, on seven hits. She struck out two and walked five.

Natalie Willey pitched two innings for B-PC, allowing eight runs, none earned, on three hits. She walked five.

Addison Spliker and Kassidy Matticks doubled, knocking in three runs each for Unity.

Allyson Murphy scored four times, while five other players scored three runs each for the Mustangs.

In the circle, Hickey allowed two runs, striking out four, walking five and hitting one batter.

The Spartans hosted Peoria Heights on Wednesday, rallying from a 6-1 deficit to record a 7-6 victory in six innings.

It was the first victory of the season for B-PC (1-8).

Both teams scored once in the opening inning before Peoria Heights tacked on single runs in the third and fourth innings in taking a 3-1 lead.

The visitors then scored three times in the top of the fifth to increase their lead to 6-1.

But the Spartans rallied in their final two at-bats.

In the fifth, B-PC put together a two-out rally, scoring four runs.

Kyra Shamblin singled to center with one out and moved to second on a Chenoweth ground out to pitcher Jenna Harmon.

Shamblin scored on a double to center by Johnson. Farwell followed with a double to right that scored Johnson, cutting the Peoria Heights lead to 6-3. Farwell advanced to third on the throw before scoring on a wild pitch with Jamea Perry at the plate to make it 6-4.

Perry walked before Willey singled to right. Perry advanced to third and scored on the throw, closing the deficit to 6-5.

After retiring the side in order in the top of the sixth, the Spartans offense went back to work.

Shamblin singled to center with one out before stealing second and third as Chenoweth walked. Shamblin scored on a passed ball and Chenoweth reached third when Johnson singled to left.

Chenoweth scored the decisive run when Farwell hit a sacrifice fly to center.

B-PC out-hit Peoria Heights 7-4 with the Spartans committing four errors, compared to two for the Patriots.

Shamblin and Johnson had two hits each with Shamblin and Chenoweth both scoring twice.

Farwell knocked in two runs, while Johnson and Willey had one run batted in each.

Willey pitched four-plus innings, allowing six runs, two earned, on four hits. She struck out eight and walked one.

Johnson pitched two innings, striking out three and walking one.

Alenea Clark had two hits and two runs scored for Peoria Heights. Harmon knocked in two runs for the Patriots.

Harmon was also the pitcher of record. In 5.2 innings, she allowed seven runs, six earned, on seven hits. She struck out six and walked five.

On Thursday, B-C was set to wrap up its regular season, heading to Monmouth to face host Monmouth United (9-22).

On Monday, the Spartans are slated to begin Illinois High School Association Class 1A Regional play, heading to Monmouth for a rematch against the Red Storm in an opening-round contest.

The victor heads to Alpha on May 20 to face regional host and top-seed Ridgewood (19-7) in semifinal play.

The second semifinal will have Orion (9-15) facing Knoxville (12-14).

The title contest is set for May 22.
