The Macomb Planning Commission voted last week to recommend rezoning of four lots owned by Youth for Christ from residential to office/institutional. Four-year YFC board member Scott Edwards told commissioners that, when obtaining a zoning variance earlier this year, his board realized that the residential zoning was inappropriate.
YFC purchased the properties in 2017 from the American Red Cross. Macomb Community Development Director Miranda Lambert said, 'It is a community institution rather than a residence.' Commissioner John Bannon agreed, telling Edwards, 'It is important to your future to clean up the zoning.'
Youth for Christ director Todd Rodeffer said, 'We think it's a great location, with the middle school and the high school in our backyard.'He said YFC is also active in Bushnell and also plans on working with teens in Rushville. Rodeffer said the Macomb building could eventually be remodeled to provide activities for 50 to 100 students.
Lambert said the Macomb City Council would hear first reading of the commission's rezoning ordinance on June 2.
