Aiming for a perfect week on the diamond, the West Prairie/Southeastern High School baseball team instead saw Illini West hand the Cyclones a 9-0 loss Friday afternoon in Carthage.
WP/SE, which had won four straight, saw its record slip to 9-10-1 overall, 3-6 in Prairieland Conference play.
Illini West improved to 20-4 overall, 7-0 in league play.
Wesley Robertson and Jaxon Steinkamp combined to pitch a five-hit shutout.
Robertson pitched five innings, allowing three hits and three walks, striking out none. Steinkamp pitched two innings, allowing two hits and two walks, striking out two.
Illini West scored twice in the opening inning and maintained a 2-0 lead until the fourth inning, when it doubled its lead to 4-0.
The Chargers added three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth on the way to finishing the contest with 12 hits.
The Cyclones committed four errors that led to five unearned runs.
Hudson Riebling doubled, while Mason Whitman, Braden Coplan, Matt Whitman and Austin Nelson added one hit apiece.
Coplan was the pitcher of record for WP/ SE. He threw four innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits. He struck out two, walked one and hit two batters.
Riebling pitched two innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on six hits, striking out two.
Cash Jones had two hits, including a home run, scoring twice and knocking in two runs.
Eli Bisby and Ethan Carlisle added two RBIs each. Grady Blue and Holton Darbyshire doubled, while Aiden Hocker and Robertson tripled for the Chargers.
The Cyclones are slated to return to action Tuesday, heading to Hamilton to face West Hancock (7-16).
It will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams.
The two teams played back on Apr. 9 with the Cyclones winning 9-4.
OnThursday, the Cyclones will host Biggsville West Central (7-12).
