Young communicators from across Illinois took the stage on April 25 for the Illinois 4‑H State Public Speaking Contest at Parkland College in Champaign. Among the standout performers were exceptional youth from McDonough and Knox counties, who earned top honors and special recognition for their compelling presentations.
McDonough County
Samuel McGruder earned the title of State Champion in the Formal Beginner Division, delivering a standout speech that impressed judges with clarity, poise, and confidence.
Knox County
Bauer Bowman received the prestigious Inspire Award in the Original Works Individual Division, recognizing the creativity, originality, and impact of his presentation.
The annual contest brings together the strongest speakers from county-level competitions, offering youth the chance to organize ideas, speak confidently before a live audience, and receive constructive feedback from judges and peers.
“Public speaking is one of the most valuable skills young people can develop,” said Cindy Ogwal, University of Illinois Extension 4‑H youth development specialist. “Through experiences like this, youth build confidence, learn to organize their thoughts, and gain the ability to clearly communicate ideas that matter.”
Participants competed in four divisions— formal speech, illustrated speech, original works, and oral interpretation—across beginner and advanced age groups. Judges also presented Inspire Awards to youth whose message, delivery, or creativity made a memorable impact.
These achievements highlight the strength of local 4‑H public speaking programs and the dedication of youth who continue to build their confidence and communication skills.
