Growing Pains Continue For Young MHS Softball Squad

The growing pains continue for the Macomb High softball team.

The Bombers played three games in as many days, losing all three in seeing their record drop to 3-16 on the season.

On Monday, the Bombers headed to Quincy for a non-conference contest against Notre Dame.

The Raiders scored four runs in the second inning and six more in the sixth in closing out an 11-1 victory.

MHS scored its run in the fourth.

Lauren Schmalshof reached on an error by QND pitcher Cadence Smith. She moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a Kinley Sloan single to center.

Lauren Schmalshof scored when younger sister Lilyan Schmalshof singled to right.

QND (15-9) scored once in the fifth before its sixth-inning outburst ended the game.

The Raiders out-hit the Bombers 13-3 with both teams committing two errors.

Sloan had two hits for MHS.

In the circle, Josie Elbe pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 11 runs, seven earned, on 13 hits. She struck out one, walked six and hit a batter.

Brielle Robb recorded two hits and three runs batted in for QND. Elise Sedovic added two hits with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Sophia White also knocked in two runs.

Natalie Zook had three hits with two runs scored and one batted in. Josie Boyer also had two hits, including a double with one run scored and one batted.

Smith pitched six innings, striking out 14. The one run she allowed was unearned.

On Tuesday, the Bombers hosted state-ranked Rockridge for a non-conference contest.

The Rockets, ranked No. 6 in Class 2A by the Illinois Coaches Association, scored in all four innings they batted in posting a 15-0 win in four innings.

Rockridge (18-5) scored four runs in the first inning before adding a single tally in the second. The Rockets scored six runs in the third and four more in the fourth, finishing the game with 11 hits.

MHS had two hits, one each by Reagan Knowles and Autumn Starback, while also committing four errors.

Sloan pitched four innings, allowing 15 runs, 13 earned, on 11 hits. She struck out two and walked nine.

Charley Perkins doubled and homered, knocking in four runs for Rockridge. Madelyn Davidalso homered, knocking in three runs and scoring twice.

Brianna Schlapkohl pitched two innings, allowing two hits and two walks, striking out five.

Tatum Lowe pitched two innings, striking out all six batters she faced.

On Wednesday, the Bombers headed to Mason County for a Prairieland Conference contest against host Havana.

An eight-run fourth inning slammed the door on the Bombers as they were defeated 13-0 in five innings, slipping to 2-4 in league play.

Havana (7-6-1, 3-1 Prairieland) scored twice in the first and three more in the second in building a 5-0 lead.

The Ducks had just six hits, but also took advantage of five Bomber errors that led to eight unearned runs.

MHS had just three hits, two by Knowles and one by Sloan.

Elbe pitched four innings, allowing 13 runs, five earned on six hits. She struck out two and walked nine.

Madolyn Howerter struck out 10 in five innings for Havana.

Kaydi Miller had two doubles and scored three runs. Elly Painter and Aslyn Nehmelman knocked in two runs each with Howerter and Ava Kramer also scoring three runs apiece.

The Bombers are next slated to return to action on May 11, hosting Beardstown in non-conference play.
