Tornados Storm Past Cyclones 8-5

West Prairie/Southeastern jumped out to a 2-0 lead before host Abingdon/Avon rallied by tying the game in the third and scoring in each of the final four innings to down the Cyclones 8-5 in non-conference softball action Wednesday.

WP/SE managed to tie the game at 4-4 with a run in the top of the fourth, but the Tornadoes came back with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to extend the lead to 8-4.

The Cyclones tried to rally late and cut into the lead with a single run in the top of the seventh to make it 8-5, but would get no closer as WP/SE fell to 2-16 on the season.

After a tough Senior Day loss to Galva on Monday, WP/SE head coach Cyle Rigg was more pleased with his squad’s performance this time around.

“Way better effort,” said Rigg. “Hitters were more aggressive and for most of the innings, we made the plays. Had one bad inning in the field, but overall, a much better performance.”

Arianna Soule took the loss for WP/SE after going the distance and giving up eight runs (three earned) on 13 hits while striking out four and walking one.

Addy Onion was the winning pitcher for A-Town going seven innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and striking out six.

Kenda Nelson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Cyclones while Tegan Rigg drove in a pair of runs and finished 2-for-4. Adriana Starks also had two hits and an RBI for WP/SE.

“Kenda was a menace on the bases,” said Rigg. “She scored from second on a flyball to center by Tegan.”

WP/SE is back in action on May 11, when the Cyclones travel to Camp Point Central for a non-conference contest.
