Indians Rally To Down Cyclones In Softball Action

The West Prairie/Southeastern softball team traveled to Payson-Seymour Saturday and the host Indians mounted a late-inning comeback to hand the Cyclones a 13-5 non-conference loss.

The loss dropped WP/SE to 2-14 for the season while Payson improved to 4-15 overall.

The Indians grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead before the Cyclones responded with a pair of runs in the second and three more in the top of the third to take a 5-1 lead.

But the hosts came back with four runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 5-5 and pulled away with three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth, and one run in the sixth to seal the victory.

Jerzie Wilson got the victory for Payson-Seymour by allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out 10.

Megan Kirby homered twice and drove in five runs to pace the Indians’ attack.

Arianna Soule took the loss for the Cyclones. She allowed nine earned runs on 10 hits. Soule struck out five and walked 10.

Kenda Nelson went 3-for-3 with a run scored while Ella Tippey homered and drove in three runs to lead WP/SE.

Kenadie Webster and Maicyn Shipman each had a double for the Cyclones.

“The girls really competed on Saturday. We just had those one or two innings defensively that got away from us,” said WP/SE head coach Cyle Rigg. “Giving them extra outs costs us every time so credit Payson.”

“Kenda had a really nice game and it was good to see her putting the bat on the ball and using her speed and she got down a really nice bunt,” Rigg continued. “Ella was due to break out and she did in a big way with that home run.”

The Cyclones were scheduled to return home on Monday to face Galva in another non-conference game at 4:30 p.m. in Colchester.

It will be Senior Day as WP/SE will honor four seniors from this year’s squad.
