Macomb Defends Municipal Housing

Aldermen voted Monday at the City Council Committee of the Whole meeting to approve a resolution supporting the Illinois Municipal League’s (IML) efforts on behalf of communities’ authority over land use and zoning matters. Mayor Mike Inman said the IML is prepared to battle legislation that would give the state more control in these areas.

“IML supports local control and preservation of municipal authority,” he said.

Alderman Dave Dorsett said the Illinois Municipal League efforts seem like an overreach. But City Attorney Lisa Scalf said, “We want to keep local decisions local.”

In other action at Monday’s City Council Committee of the Whole meeting, aldermen discussed an upcoming ordinance amendment that would raise a planned Illinois Water Pollution Control loan from $3.5 million to $4 million. Macomb would use the money for sewer plant improvements.

Public Works Director Alice Ohrtmann said the revised debt authorization ordinance would allow a principal forgiveness amount of $1.8 million. City Administrator Scott Coker said, “This will improve our cash flow because there will be change orders as the work proceeds.”
