The Eta Epsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Delta inducted twelve new members during its seventeenth ceremony on Wednesday, April 22 in Knoblauch Hall on the Western Illinois University campus. WIU President Kristi Mindrup assisted in awarding membership certificates and in reading the membership induction statement to the new members. In addition to the induction ceremony, Mindrup presented an update on the status of international student enrollment at WIU.
This year's inductees are Kaylann Beekman (USA), Kenro Black (USA), Tammie Leigh Brown-Edwards (USA), Lina Chekeche (Zimbabwe), Arup Devnath (Bangladesh), Zaki Faisal (Bangladesh), Jocelyn Fowler (USA), Shabiha Jahan (Bangladesh), Bradley Jenkins (USA), Azmary Khatun (Bangladesh), Benjamin Michael (Nigeria), Nichole Rodriguez (USA).
The purpose of the Eta Epsilon chapter is to recognize and encourage high professional, intellectual, academic and personal achievements in the field of international education. Applications are accepted year round, and an induction ceremony is held each spring.
Phi Beta Delta, founded at California State University, Long Beach in 1986, was established as an organization in 1987, with 38 chartered chapters, many of which had existed for a considerable time previously at the local level. It is the first honor society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievement in international education. There are currently over 200 chapters worldwide, and WIU's Eta Epsilon chapter was founded in 2009. The WIU chapter hosts Culture Nights for new international students and awards two scholarships each year, among other activities.
