After seeing one game postponed earlier this week due to inclement weather, the West Prairie/Southeastern softball team still hit the road for back-to-back non-conference games against Monmouth United and Barry Western.
Wednesday afternoon in Barry, the hosts scored in every inning but the sixth enroute to an 8-0 victory over the Cyclones.
Western (9-8) scored single runs in the first and second inning before pushing across four runs in the third to go up 6-0.
The Wildcats would extend the lead to 8-0 with runs in the fourth and fifth off of WP/SE starter Arianna Soule.
The Cyclones’ offense was held to just two hits by Western starter Loryn White who struck out nine and walked six in six innings of work.
Soule took the loss for WP/SE after giving up eight runs (four earned) on just six hits while striking out three and walking six.
Soule accounted for one of the two hits, while Ella Tippey went 1-for-3 with a double.
WP/SE committed three errors in the game as the Cyclones fell to 2-13 for the season.
On Tuesday, the visiting Cyclones saw a late rally fall short as WP/SE dropped a 12-9 decision to United in Monmouth.
The Cyclones took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before United came back with two runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the second to take a 4-1 lead.
WP/SE cut the gap to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the third, but the Red Storm answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to go up 6-3.
The Cyclones closed to within 6-5 with two runs in the fourth but the Red Storm responded once again in the bottom of the fourth with a single run to lead by a 7-5 margin.
United extended its advantage to 11-5 with a four-run fifth before WP/SE came roaring back with four runs in the sixth to get within 11-9.
United (6-17) would add a run in the bottom of the sixth and hold the Cyclones in check in the seventh to take the victory.
Soule was the losing pitcher, but the freshman hurler was not helped by the WP/SE defense which committed seven errors in the contest.
Soule allowed 12 runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out five and walking six.
The Cyclones’ offense pounded out nine hits as Kenadie Webster led the attack by going 3-for-4 including a home run and a double to drive in three runs.
Tegan Rigg went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs while Kenda Nelson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
“We had a lot of innings that we gave them extra outs and (United) scored in just about every one of those situations,” said WP/SE head coach Cyle Rigg. “Our offense would claw back and get some runs, but our defense didn’t hold up for us.”
“Having Tegan and Kenadie hitting well at the same time is a huge boost for us,” Rigg added. “I was so happy for Kenadie hitting her first home run this year and Tegan continues to be our most consistent hitter on the year.”
WP/SE will travel to Payson on Saturday to participate in the Payson-Seymour Triangular. The Cyclones are scheduled to face the host Indians (3-15) at 10 a.m. before taking on Triopia/Meredosia-Chambersburg/Virginia at noon.
Payson-Seymour will play Triopia/Meredosia-Chambersburg/ Virginia (18-0) at 2 p.m. to round out the event.
