Hayes Arrested for Copper Theft

Around 9 a.m. Friday the Macomb Police Department posted on their Facebook page to avoid the Pearl/Jackson intersection due to heavy police presence for a warrant service. Around that time, Sean Hayes, 38, of Macomb was arrested for allegedly stealing copper from utility vehicles.

On Friday morning, MPD executed a search warrant at a home in the 900 block of East Jackson Street, and arrested Hayes for possession of stolen property and possession of drug paraphernalia. On April 20, MPD received a report that a large quantity of copper wire had been stolen from utility trucks parked on a lot along Hemp Road. Through an investigation spanning three days, it was determined that over the course of a month, several hundred pounds of wire and equipment had been stolen.

During the search of the home in which Hayes was located, several multiple items, believed to have been stolen were found. According to MPD Interim Chief Todd Tedrow, the investigation is ongoing. The McDonough County Sheriff's Office assisted with the arrest. Hayes was released and will appear in McDonough County Circuit Court on the latest charges.

He also has additional court appearances scheduled for disorderly conduct charges stemming from an Oct. 3 incident in which he allegedly threatened a McDonald's employee, as well as threatened an individual near T.J. Maxx. He was to appear in McDonough County Circuit Court April 15 for a pre-trial, but failed to appear so a contempt warrant was issued. That case has been continued to May 13.

In addition, Hayes was initially arrested last July in connection with the shooting death of Bryson Saddoris, 21; however, he was released a few weeks later, on Aug. 19, after charges were dropped by McDonough County State's Attorney Matt Kwacala, who said there was new evidence that supported Hayes' release. He initially denied involvement in the shooting but reportedly had admitted to photographing the Saddoris' body and cleaning the crime scene. Morgan Bearce is currently lodged on first degree murder charges related to the case.
