The Macomb city council Monday voted to adopt a 20262027 budget, which will take effect May 1. The budget totals $56.5 million. City Administrator Scott Coker said the budget was the product of several public meetings and discussions. Mayor Mike Inman added, “This budget demonstrates how diligent we are in our stewardship.”
Aldermen voted to create a new business registration program. Though it takes effect with the new budget, an annual $25 registration fee will not go into effect until May 1, 2027. Alderman John Vigezzzi said, “This will help everybody in terms of communication.”
Also approved was a code amendment regarding late rental registration fees. Past fees have been eliminated in favor of a single fee of $25 per rental unit.The council adopted an updated city fee schedule. Garbage pickup fees will be $23.50 per month, the minimum water fee will be $5.75 per month plus a $15 debt service fee, and the minimum sewer fee will be $5.50 per month plus a $6 debt service fee.
On advice of the city’s external auditor, the council adopted an amended budget closing out the 2025-2026 spending ordinance. The budget which ends April 30 totals $52.7 million.
In other business, aldermen voted to approve $41,168 for the purchase of a new squad car for the Macomb Police Department. Interim Police Chief Todd Tedrow said the new car would replace the oldest vehicle in the patrol fleet, which will be given to the school resource officer.
The council also approved the police department’s activity report for March. There were 1,233 calls for service and officers made 41 arrests. There was one taser deployment on March 25, and police overtime totaled $25,967.
Mayor Inman began the city council meeting with a moment of silence in memory of Sally Egler, who died following a home accident on Sunday. Egler taught for many years at Macomb High School and served for 30 years on the Macomb Zoning Board of Appeals.
