MAC Young Artists II Exhibit

MAC Young Artists II Exhibit
Artwork on currently display at MAC by West Prairie North students

A child’s mind is perhaps the only place where the impossible remains an everyday occurrence, a vast landscape where a single crayon stroke can bridge the gap between reality and the boundless reach of the imagination. In the hands of a young artist, a blank page is not an empty space, but a silent invitation to conjure worlds that the rest of us have long since forgotten how to see.

The Macomb Arts Center (MAC) is currently offering a window into these enchanting realms with its “Young Artists II” exhibition on display through Saturday. Featuring work from students in kindergarten through sixth grade, the gallery has been transformed into a vibrant space of childhood creativity, proving that brilliance does not require a degree—only a sense of wonder.

The collection showcases an impressive technical range, from the delicate blending of chalk pastels to the bold confidence of mixed media. Camden Shotts, a fifth grader, captures a hauntingly beautiful locomotive under a starlit moon in chalk pastel, while sixth grader Devyn Smith uses watercolor to create a celestial swirl of purple and blue that feels both cosmic and intimate.

The exhibition also highlights the storytelling power of the younger set. Wyatt Sammelman’s mixed-media portrait radiates joy through a kaleidoscope of color, and several student artists utilized “gridding” to master the proportions of iconic figures like Batman and Venom. These pieces serve as a bridge between prospective artists finding their place in the world and spectators who have developed a lifelong knack for appreciating diverse styles.

Whether it is a playful oil pastel of a curious chicken by Landon Hodges or a series of expressive paper collages, every piece in this collection is a testament to the uninhibited brilliance that lives within these children—a reminder that before they learn the rules of the world, they are busy inventing their own. The Macomb Arts Center invites the community to witness this profound display of talent, where the simplest materials are transformed by the extraordinary wonder of a child's perspective. It is a rare chance to see the future of art through the eyes of those who still believe anything is possible.

The Macomb Arts Center, located at 25 East Side Square, is open from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 4-7 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. This event is free to the general public.
