Season Ends For Cyclone Softball In Regional Semifinal

The West Prairie High School softball team saw its season end Thursday as the Cyclones lost to host Abingdon-Avon 15-3 in an Illinois High School Association Class 1A Regional semifinal.

West Prairie scored twice in the top of the first after two were out.

Belle Petty singled to center before scoring on a triple by Lindsey Dunn. Paige Kitch followed with an infield single to the pitcher that scored Dunn.

A-Town answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice. The Tornadoes used two singles with runners advancing a base on a fly ball to center.

Morgan Tracey followed with a two-run single to center that tied the contest.

West Prairie used three singles in the top of the second to tally a single run, taking a 3-2 lead.

Abingdon-Avon took control of the game in the bottom of the second.

The Tornadoes pounded out eight hits, including three triples, in scoring eight runs. That gave the home team a 10-3 lead.

A-Town added two runs in the third and three more in the fourth on the way to recording the run-rule victory.

Abingdon-Avon out-hit West Prairie 16-9.

Dunn and Kitch each had two hits and a run batted in, while Addalyn Stanberry also knocked in a run for the Cyclones.

Petty, Dunn and Maicyn Shipman each scored a run.

Petty pitched three innings, allowing 12 runs on 14 hits. She struck out three and walked one.

Branch pitched one inning, allowing three runs on two hits. She struck out two, walked two and hit two batters.

Emma Gunther had three hits, including two triples with four runs scored and two batted in for A-Town.

Ellie Pompeo had two hits and three runs batted in, while Taylor Ford added three hits, scoring three runs and knocking in two.

Tracey added two hits and two RBIs, while Addy Onion also had two hits.

In the circle, Onion pitched five innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, striking out eight.

West Prairie finished the season with a final record of seven wins and 20 losses.

A-Town faced top-seeded West Central in Friday’s title contest with the Heat winning 6-0.

Abingdon-Avon finished its season with a record of 14-19, while West Central (30-6) advanced to Class 1A Sectional play Wednesday at Woodhull against Fulton (19-11).
