One day removed from an extra-inning victory against rival West Prairie/Southeastern, the Macomb High baseball squad lost a 3-2 decision to host Brimfield/ Elmwood Tuesday afternoon at Brimfield.
MHS slipped to 10-3 overall, 1-1 in Prairieland play, while Brimfield/ Elmwood improved to 10-1 overall, 3-0 in league contests.
The Bombers grabbed a 2-0 lead two batters into the contest.
Isaac Leinbach drew a four-pitch walk from Indian pitcher Kaeden Schatsiek to open the game.
Nick Elbe followed by homering to left on a 3-1 pitch to give MHS the early lead.
Unfortunately for the Bombers, Elbe’s home run was their lone hit on the day. In fact, MHS had just three baserunners the remainder of the contest.
John Ogle reached on an error by the second baseman with two outs in the first inning. Kaden Knupp was hit by a pitch to open the top of the fourth inning. Jaxon Barclay then hit into a fielder’s choice, forcing Knupp out at second.
Macomb maintained its lead until the bottom of the fourth, when Brimfield/Elmwood put together a two-out rally that included two errors by the Bombers.
Connor Doe singled to right with one out. After Blake Bruner struck out for the second out of the inning, Noah Malone reached on an error by Ogle at second base.
Brody Kenney followed by singling to center on a 2-2 pitch, scoring Doe, making the score 2-1.
Griffin Hougham loaded the bases with an infield single to short. An error by Katz at short allowed Malone to score, tying the contest at 2-2.
Elbe then walked Layne Johnson to force home Kenney, giving the Indians the lead.
Schatsiek retired the final nine Macomb batters in order, allowing the Indians to hang on for the win.
Elbe pitched four innings, allowing three runs, all unearned, on four hits. He struck out five, walked one and hit a batter.
Blaine Eddington pitched two innings, striking out two.
Schatsiek struck out 14, walked one and hit a batter in going the distance for Brimfield/Elmwood.
The Bombers were slated to return to action Thursday playing at Camp Point Central (8-2).
MHS is scheduled to head to Peoria Heights Saturday to face the Patriots (0-6, 0-2 Prairieland) in a Prairieland conference contest.
