BUSHNELL – The Bushnell City Council this week heard public comments from a guest speaker and local resident, Jim Martin, about his concerns over consistent motor vehicle speeding on Hurst and Hail streets which run parallel to each other.
“The speeding is a real problem. I would love for one of the officers to park in front of my house. You would be surprised how many tickets you could issue,” Martin said.
“It’s getting really bad, I’m worried somebody could be hurt. It could be a little kid, it could be anyone,” Martin said, saying that he feels that a major motor vehicle accident is basically a “promise” because of the speed of traffic on those two streets. He suggested that a possible solution might be the return to using speed signs with radar detection which were used before and were successful in slowing vehicle traffic.
Bushnell board members pointed out that the current police chief Justin Hood and his staff have issued more tickets than the previous staff, but simply issuing tickets and installing speed signs with radar detection as a solution, may not be as clear cut as it may first appear to be. Even if the accused is cited and even taken to court, they may or not be able to pay the fine which, again, doesn’t solve the problem of speeding on Hurst and Hail Streets.
Board members said this is a major concern for the county and the city, and the matter will be taken forward to the next Police Committee meeting.
